The Whistler Village Gondola will be closed until a full maintenance review of the lift is completed after a mechanical failure caused a long delay on Monday (Jan. 10), Whistler Blackcomb (WB) officials said in a press release.

Approximately 300 patrons were on the gondola when it stopped shortly before 10 a.m. Monday morning, the release said. The lower line was operational within about 20 minutes and began offloading passengers at Olympic Station, but the upper line did not begin moving until 11:27 a.m. at a reduced speed to offload those stuck in cabins.

All gondola passengers were off the lift by 12:20 p.m., the release said, adding that safety was never a concern. Temperatures at Roundhouse Lodge were near -14 C at midday.

Each person coming off the top of the lift was offered a free lift ticket, free meal voucher and hand/toe warmers. The Fresh Tracks program will be cancelled temporarily until the gondola is running again.
